Google Announces New Accessibility Features for Android and Chrome

Google recently announced a new set of accessibility features for Android and Chrome aimed at improving the user experience for people with disabilities. The new features include an updated Switch Access service for Android, which allows users to control their device using a switch or keyboard instead of touch.

In addition, Google has introduced new Voice Access features for Android, which enable users to navigate their device using voice commands. These features can be particularly helpful for people with mobility or dexterity issues.

Google has also made improvements to Chrome's screen reader, making it easier for users to navigate web pages and access information. This includes the ability to access headings, links, and form fields more easily, as well as improved support for dynamic content like pop-up menus and carousels.

Web Accessibility release of WCAG 2.2

As of May 2023, there is no official release date for WCAG 2.2. However, the latest draft of WCAG 2.2 was published in November 2021 and is currently in the Candidate Recommendation phase. This means that the working group is seeking public comment and feedback on the draft, and once the feedback is incorporated, it will move on to the Proposed Recommendation phase.

WCAG 2.2 is expected to introduce new success criteria to improve accessibility for users with cognitive and learning disabilities, mobile device users, and users of e-commerce websites. Some of the proposed new success criteria include:

  • Success criteria for input modalities, such as voice input and motion input
  • Success criteria for content that adapts or responds to user actions, such as hover menus and auto-play media
  • Success criteria for authentication and identity verification, such as multi-factor authentication
  • Success criteria for providing users with more control over content and functionality, such as volume control and undo/redo actions

Once WCAG 2.2 is officially released, it will provide updated guidelines for web accessibility and will likely influence the development of new websites and digital products.
